Government Spending Spree Comes in Wake of Impending Shutdown

"The reason for their haste is a system set up by Congress that, in many cases, requires agencies to spend all their allotted funds by Sept. 30.

If they don’t, the money becomes worthless to them on Oct. 1. And — even worse — if they fail to spend the money now, Congress could dock their funding in future years. The incentive, as always, is to spend.

This same type of funding debacle goes on all over America in businesses that work off of this same budgetary model. Agencies and departments that are frugal do not Folger to save their money. They are forced to spend frivolously to be able to justify that same budget for the following year. This model promotes waste and punishes responsible spending. This happens every day in government and is taking place right under the nose of an impending government shutdown. 

"While Congress is working overtime to spent billions of dollars to fund the government and avoid a shutdown, federal agencies are on a freewheeling spending spree to burn through all of their money before the fiscal year ends Monday night."
