Athens Clarke County Library Seeks Bilingual Community Organizer
Purpose & Scope
The Athens-Clarke County Library has a position opening for help with a series of PRIME TIME Family Reading Time workshops to be held the beginning of 2014. The workshops are funded in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) and administered by Georgia Public Library Service. This bilingual series of workshops will target native Spanish-speaking families throughout the community and will run Jan. 30 - March 6, 2014.
Community Organizer, PrimeTime
The program is designed to serve families of children ages 6-10 years and is a reading, discussion and storytelling series based on children’s books; it involves working directly with families for six weeks to discuss books, model good reading habits and skills in storytelling and reading aloud. The focus is on at risk children in grades 1-3 who will attend a reading and discussion program with a parent or guardian that is led by a scholar and storyteller, while any younger siblings attend a storytime program with a preschool coordinator. The grant provides not only books for the six weeks of the program, but transportation for families if needed, other incentives and a meal each week over the course of the series of workshops.
This temporary, part-time position will work weekly on Thursday evenings at the Athens-Clarke County Library during the scheduled workshops beginning Jan. 30 through March 6, 2014; however additional time will be required prior to the workshops begin for training and planning meetings as well as over the course of each week to make phone calls to families, to help coordinate transportation and implementation of the program.
