Vast Majority of Democrats Think Confederate Flag is Racist - But, Most Americans Don't
A new poll conducted by Gallup reveals that, while most American adults views the Confederate flag as a symbol of Southern pride, Democrats overwhelmingly see the flag as a symbol of racism.
The Gallup poll, which surveyed 2,013 American adults, asked individuals about their views on the highly contested Confederate flag. One of the questions asked whether individuals view the Confederate flag as a symbol of Southern pride or racism.
The results show that 54% of national adults see the Confederate flag as a symbol of Southern pride, while 34% view the flag as a symbol of racism.
Broken down by political party lines, 78% of Republicans think the flag symbolizes Southern pride, while 13% think the flag symbolizes racism. 59% of Independent voters view the flag as a symbol of Southern pride and 29% percent view it as a symbol of racism.
For Democrats, however, 58% think the Confederate flag is a symbol of racism compared to only 32% who believe the flag symbolizes Southern pride.
The Gallup poll comes just days after CNN conducted a similar poll that also found that most – 57% – of Americans views the Confederate flag as a symbol of Southern pride.
