As quoted from a Facebook post by Ken Mayo:
"Do you understand Islam? Through a lot of reading I came to understand the following. Hope this helps.
In trying to understand Islam it is important to understand that there were two periods in Muhammed's life. His early life and his later life, the difference between Mecca and Medina, Muhammed as a man of peace and Muhammed as a warrior. In reading the Koran if you don't understand the change that took place between his earlier life in Mecca and later life in Medina you will not understand the conflict that sometimes arises when verses contradict each other. When they do, the key is understanding that the verses written in the later period supersede the ones written earlier in his life.
My instructor in Islam and terrorism is Mark A. Gabriel, PhD., who grew up as a devout Muslim in Egypt. He memorized the Koran by the age of 12, earned a doctorate in Islamic history and culture, and taught at Al-Azhar University, Cairo, the most prestigious Islamic university in the world. In addition to a number of other books I've now read and studied four of his books - Islam and Terrorism, Journey into the Mind of an Islamic Terrorist, Jesus and Muhammad and Islam and the Jews. In my opinion there is no better source."
