SPRINGFIELD, Illinois - Over 1100 Sangamon County Republicans braved the cold in Springfield Tuesday to hear Dr. Ben Carson at their annual Lincoln birthday celebration, local TV media reports.
The world-renowned physician and author has strong conservative opinions about how to heal divisiveness in Washington; and he says it starts with voters.
"I would like to see [people] learn who their representatives are; so that when they go into the voting booth, they're not looking for a "D" or "R" or name that looks familiar. They know exactly who that person is and what they voted for and was that something consistent with their values."
Carson believes a big issue destroying our country is fiscal irresponsibility. Right now, national debt stands at more than $17.3 trillion. America's approval rating of Congress averaged a historic low of 14-percent last year, according to Gallup polls. So what does he think we need from our political leaders? "I think what we need now from leaders is courage," Carson said.
