Oregon Standoff and Hats With Feathers

"This might be the best part of the Oregon militia/rancher story.

Buried deep in the story is evidence as to why the government should never attempt to do anything.

As you probably know, the dispute revolves around a wildlife refuge. So why is that area set aside as a wildlife refuge?

"The refuge was established in 1908 by President Theodore Roosevelt to protect bird populations that had been decimated by plume hunters selling feathers for the hat industry."

Got that? The government took a giant chunk of land because of the THREAT of the HAT industry. Because lots of people put feathers in hats, as you know. And the ongoing eternal threat of the HAT INDUSTRY was enough for a progressive to take "common sense" steps to make sure that the little birds had a safe place to build nests. AWAY FROM THE HAT PEOPLE.

The problem is, that there was no way to reverse the land grab after we all realized that almost no one on earth puts feathers in hats anymore. The government just gets to keep the land.

But, of course they do. This is what government does when given the opportunity. Whatever the legitimacy of the concern of the day, it's yet another example of how power is acquired and never relinquished.

My new years resolution: MORE FEATHERS IN HATS."
