David Daley, Salon editor, is the Mirror’s new CEO/publisher
As head of the editorial side of Salon, Daley has directed coverage of the presidential campaign and all of Salon’s award-winning journalism, established Salon’s social media presence, and driven readership to record-breaking heights in the site’s 20-year history.
“The Connecticut Mirror does the deepest reporting on politics and policy of any publication in the state. Its non-partisan work from the Capitol and beyond, by a team of brilliant journalists, has become indispensable in today’s difficult media environment,” Daley said. “This is my home state, and the erosion of journalism here must end. We are going to build the model of the future, and create a new industry standard for distributing the objective, high-quality journalism we need to be informed citizens and voters.”
Nationally recognized as a strategist for the growth of digital journalism, Daley was appointed a Digital Media Fellow at the University of Georgia’s Willson Center for Humanities and the Arts and the Grady College of Journalism – home of the Peabody Awards and one of the top journalism schools in the country. He has delivered major lectures on new developments in digital journalism, and led seminars and workshops with students.
During Daley’s career, he has worked in increasingly responsible positions at, among others, the Hartford Courant, Details magazine and the Louisville Courier-Journal. He served as culture editor and executive editor of Salon before becoming editor-in-chief in June 2013. He is the author of a forthcoming book on gerrymandering and the consequences of redistricting, “Ratf**ked: The True Story Behind the Secret Plan to Steal America’s Democracy” (June 14, WW Norton/Liveright), a deeply reported study of the Republicans’ brilliant and ground-breaking 2010 REDMAP campaign. His work has also appeared in National Journal, New York magazine, USA Today and many other publications.
The CTMirror and its sister sites aim to give Connecticut’s citizens the information they need to be engaged members of a functioning democracy. “We believe that David Daley has the vision, the knowledge and the experience to implement an ambitious growth strategy across both the editorial and business sides of the enterprise,” said Shelley Geballe, co-president of the News Project’s Board of Directors. “He shares our goal of providing even-handed, unbiased reporting to every resident of Connecticut to inform their participation in the state’s civic life.”
A native of South Windsor, Daley is a graduate of Boston College and earned his master’s in journalism at the University of North Carolina. He lives currently in Brooklyn, N.Y., with his wife, Jennifer; and 3-year-old son, Wyatt. He will begin work at the Connecticut News Project in early July.
