Franklin High- 11th grade Required Reading – Graphic Rape

Franklin High- 11th grade Required Reading – Graphic Rape

eyes

My friend “Sue” told me that at Parent-Teacher night last week, at Franklin High School in TN, she found out that her 11th grade child would be reading “Their Eyes Were Watching God,” by Zora Neale Hurston. She was shocked. As a concerned parent, she researched this book and discovered it contained four graphic rape scenes.

The 11th grade English teacher had selected this book from a List of Acceptable Books for Williamson County Schools. The teacher said that her child had permission to read a different book, if she so desired, but that the rest of the class would be reading and discussing this one.

Whatever happened to Shakespeare? Jane Austen? George Orwell? Charles Dickens?!! Graphic Rape? Really?

Let’s have Mike Looney read it aloud at the next School Board meeting. If he is uncomfortable doing that, why are our children reading it at school?

Contact Superintendent Mike Looney, mike.looney@wcs.edu, if you think graphic rape is inappropriate reading for high school.
