AURORA TOWNSHIP GOP CENSURES U.S. SENATOR MARK KIRK

AURORA - Because of Mark Kirk's votes this week against defunding Planned Parenthood, the Aurora Township Republican Organization voted to censure the Senator and will not encourage support for nor include information about the Republican incumbent in their March 15th GOP Primary campaign literature.

The Aurora Township GOP Executive Board unanimously agreed to censure Senator Kirk for not upholding the IL GOP platform and being the only Republican in the U.S. Senate to side with Democrats twice last week against defunding Planned Parenthood.

"We warned Senator Kirk in the first censure passed a few weeks ago that he was jeopardizing our organization's support if he did not vote in a way that upheld the IL GOP platform," Aurora Township GOP secretary Jennifer Nevins told Illinois Review

Nevins, who has been a precinct committeeman in Aurora Township for three years, said she's been dissatisfied with Senator Kirk's voting record for quite a while. She and others on the executive board viewed Kirk's position on Planned Parenthood as one that provoked a "line in the sand" to be drawn.

The Aurora Township GOP, chaired by township committeeman Lindsay Timm, voted this past Thursday night to act on their ignored first censure and remove Mark Kirk's name from any future campaign literature coming from their organization.

"That will affect the 60,000 voters in our township," Nevins said.

Aurora Township is also near one of Planned Parenthood's largest, most active and protested facilities in Illinois.

"Many Republicans voted for Mark Kirk in 2010 because all that mattered at the time was for Republicans to gain the majority in the U.S. Senate," she said. "How has that made a difference?"

"Now we're voting based on the quality of Republican candidates, not just the quantity," Nivens said.

Nivens said she is fairly new in political activism, and after being a certified teacher for 20 years, she now owns an educational service business.

"We've had some feedback on the censure, but have heard nothing from Senator Kirk nor Illinois Republican Party Chairman Tim Schneider yet," she said.

One or two have told the Aurora GOP that the censure will hand the election over to Democrat Tammy Duckworth, but that was before Oswego's James Marter announced his candidacy this week. If Marter, a businessman who has never held office before, gets on the GOP primary ballot, Illinois Republicans will have a choice on March 15th.

"It came to the realm of how to look yourself in the mirror and still support Senator Kirk," Nevins said.

The first censure the west suburban Aurora Township GOP passed was worded as follows:

RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF THE CENSURE OF MARK KIRK, THE UNITED STATES SENATOR FROM THE STATE OF ILLINOIS BY THE AURORA TOWNSHIP REPUBLICAN CENTRAL COMMITTEE

Whereas, it is the responsibility and the right of the Aurora Township Republican Central Committee, and of all Republicans, to speak and act in the support and the defense of the long-established and fundamental principles of the Republican Party as contained in the Illinois Republican Party Platform; and

Whereas, when any official elected to any position as a Republican repeatedly acts in contravention of these principles, it is the duty of all Illinois Republicans, including this body, to protect and defend these principles by publicly stating its disapproval of that official’s actions; and

Whereas, when any official continues to engage in a course of conduct that violates fundamental principles of the Illinois Republican Party Platform, it is the duty of all Republicans to take such measures ass are available to them with the aim of placing the interests of all citizens-be they born or unborn-ahead of any political or personal interests; and,

Whereas, while entrusted with the office of Senator by the voters of Illinois, Mark Kirk has committed a series of actions incompatible with the principles of the Illinois Republican Party, among which the following action is the most recent and egregious offense upon which this Resolution in Support of Censure is motivated:

  • Voted to defeat the United States Senate effort to de-fund Planned Parenthood.  Senator Kirk was the sole member of the Republican Senate to ally with Senate Democrats in voting to continue tax-payer funding of the aforementioned organization after the appearance of significant evidence that it, as a business, was engaged in the dissection and preparation of fetal bodies for purported “research” and apparent  profit.

Whereas, as a result of this action, Mark Kirk has lost the full confidence of this body in his ability to serve as a Republican senator representing the people of Illinois in a manner consistent with the platform of the Republican Party.  Specifically, the Senator’s vote is in violation of the Platform as delineated in the Platform’s preamble and, additionally, Article VI which outlines the Party’s general dedication to the unborn and expresses abhorrence towards the use of fetal remains for any utilitarian purpose; and

Whereas, the Aurora Township Republican Central Committee, while regretfully acknowledging that certain Republican members of Congress are pro-choice, believes that the barbaric practice of conducting abortion in such a way that enables the harvesting of fetal bodies in whole or in part has no place whatsoever in civilized society.

Therefore, it is hereby resolved:

  1. That this body condemns the action taken by Mark Kirk as fundamentally opposed to the principles stipulated in the Illinois Republican Party Platform.
  2. That as a result of Senator Kirk’s vote, we resolve that he should be censured as the United States Senator for the State of Illinois.
  3. That this body respectfully requests that Senator Kirk refrain from any further act that is inconsistent with the Illinois Republican Party platform.
  4. That this body issues notice to Senator Kirk that should be choose to take any such action, he will jeopardize any and all forms of support this body customarily gives all Republican officials, including, but not limited to, promotion in voter outreach efforts.
  5. That this body directs its Secretary to relay this Resolution to other Executive Committees, coupled with the request that each committee take this resolution under consideration for adoption in whatever form they deem appropriate.
  6. That this body takes this action and adopts this resolution without personal animosity towards the supporters of Mark Kirk or to the Senator himself.

Signed by the Officers of the Aurora Township Central Committee
