The Curious Case of Dr. Albert Mohler

The Curious Case of Dr. Albert Mohler

Sadly, it appears that Dr. Mohler has been pulled into Russell Moore’s orbit.

Dr. Albert Mohler is a prominent Southern Baptist, serving as the president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He has always, in my experience, been an uncompromising advocate for the authority of Scripture on matters great and small, including human sexuality.

However, he seems to have been drawn into the gravitational pull of Russell Moore, the president of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC), who has already admitted defeat in the culture war over the definition of marriage, and seems to believe the best we can hope for is to be left with some vestiges of religious liberty which we can exercise furtively inside the four walls of our churches.

Dr. Mohler gave a major address at Dr. Moore’s recent ERLC conference, “The Gospel, Homosexuality, and the Future of Marriage”. His full speech can be heard and seen here.

The first 29 minutes of the speech was an unflinching affirmation of biblical truth on human sexuality. But then he began to make statements that are somewhat confusing and call for clarification.

During his speech (at about the 29:40 mark), he said the following (emphasis mine):

“One of the things we should not be embarrassed to say is that we are learning. One of the embarrassments that I have to bear is that I have written on some of these issues now for nearly 30 years, and at a couple of points I have to say ‘I got that wrong,’ and we have to go back and correct it, correct it by Scripture.

“Now early in this controversy, I felt it quite necessary, in order to make clear the gospel, to deny anything like a sexual orientation. And speaking at an event of the National Association of Evangelicals twenty-something years ago, I made that point. I repent of that.”

I’m not sure how to read this in any other way than that he believes there is such a thing as a homosexual orientation, and that it is wrong and unbiblical to believe otherwise.

He then seems to veer into averring that people can be born this way.

“I believe that a biblical, theological understanding, a robust biblical theology, would point to us that human sexual, affective, um, profiles of who we are sexually, is far more deeply rooted than just the will, if that were so easy.

“But Genesis 3 explains that, helps us to understand that this complex of same-sex challenges coming to us is something that is deeply rooted in the biblical story itself, and something we need to take with far greater seriousness than we have taken it in the past, understanding that that requires a far more robust gospel response than anything the church has come up with heretofore.

He sets up and knocks down a straw man along the way, since I don’t know anyone who says the process of overcoming unwanted same-sex attraction is easy.

He sets up and knocks over another straw man when he accuses biblical adherents of believing that misdirected sexual impulses are not rooted in something deeper than the will. But a plain reading of Romans 7 tells us that every sinful impulse, including the impulse toward homosexual conduct, is rooted in our fallen humanity.

But more dangerously, he states plainly that the church has never, in 2000 years, gotten the issue of homosexuality right. What’s required, Dr. Mohler says, is a far more “robust” response than the church has ever, in its entire history, articulated.

Although Dr. Mohler would certainly reject this characterization, his view logically seems to require us to adopt a view somewhat along the lines of, “If Paul and Jesus only understood what we know today about the complexities of human sexuality...”

In fact, the homosexual lobby, in setting aside the plain teaching of Scripture, often uses the argument that the writers of Scripture didn’t know anything about the modern concept of “sexual orientation” because they lived in a darkened and unenlightened time. Now that we know so much more than either Jesus or Paul about the complexities of human nature, they say, we can safely set aside their benighted teaching on sexuality as an archaic relic of an uninformed past. Dr. Mohler, I’m afraid, has a laid a trap for himself here.

Shortly thereafter, however, in the same speech, he said this:

“I don’t believe the Christian church has misread Scripture for two millennia. Uh, I don’t believe that, uh, that, that, that there was information lacking to the Holy Spirit that would have changed the meaning, uh, of these texts, information that’s now available to us.”

This is confusing at best. Has the church not misread the Scripture for two millennia, or has it failed to ever articulate the “robust” response homosexuality requires?

Other observers think Dr. Mohler’s meaning was quite clear. Here is what Chelsen Vicari of the Institute on Religion & Democracy took away from the speech, according to OneNewsNow:

"I was very surprised by Dr. Mohler's changing tone. And I was very thankful that he took time during his speech to actually confess that he had gotten sexual orientation wrong earlier in his career and that he is willing to say that there are individuals who are born with an innate sexual attraction to the same gender."

Dr. Mohler’s views appear to have undergone a subtle but noticeable revision since 2011. Here’s what he had to say about reparative therapy in 2011:

This means that Christians cannot accept any argument that suggests that a fundamental reorientation of the believer’s desires in a way that increasingly pleases God and is increasingly obedient to Christ is impossible. To the contrary, we must argue that this process is exactly what the Christian life is to demonstrate. As Paul writes, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” [2 Corinthians 5:17]

Here, however, is what he says now, in 2014. (You will note that while there is a rejection of the efficacy of secular reparative therapy, there is no explicit affirmation that Christ-centered reparative therapy can work. There is a vague assurance about the only remedy for sin being the gospel, but does that remedy include re-orientation of homosexual desires? Dr. Mohler doesn’t say.)

Put simply, most people experiencing a same-sex attraction tell of discovering it within themselves at a very early age, certainly within early puberty. As they experience it, a sexual attraction or interest simply “happens,” and they come to know it.

The concept of sexual orientation is not only helpful, it is in some sense essential. Even those who argue against its existence have to describe and affirm something tantamount to it. There is a pattern of sexual interest and attraction that is discovered in early adolescence. It is not something that is, in itself, freely chosen.

At the same time, our biblically-informed understanding of sexual orientation will chasten us from having any confidence that there is any rescue from same-sex attraction to be found in any secular approach, therapy, or treatment. Christians know that the only remedy for sin is the atonement of Christ and the gift of salvation. The only hopeful answer to sin, in any form, is the Gospel of Christ.

If something is “discovered,” that means it was there all along. That’s why the California Gold Rush of 1849 was not caused by the invention of gold but by its discovery. It had been there all along, since the dawn of time, and was only revealed during California’s adolescence. I’m not sure there is any way to interpret Dr. Mohler’s statement other than that he believes, along with Lady Gaga, that homosexuals are “born that way.”

Now if people are “born that way,” then it’s like hair color or eye color. It’s not something you can change. Perhaps it is something you can control, but not something that you can change. Thus, it’s a logical extension of Dr. Mohler’s position to write, as I did in my column, that Dr Mohler was “repenting of the thought that it is possible for homosexual sinners to change their orientation.”

Now if Dr. Mohler does believe that individuals can be born that way, he is certainly wrong. Despite decades of fruitless research, no gay gene has ever been identified. Even pro-homosexual researchers have thrown in the towel. Research done on identical twins reveals that the concordance rate for homosexuality, which should be 100% if homosexuality is genetically determined, is only between five and seven percent.

If Dr. Mohler is not saying homosexuals are born that way, then what exactly does he mean by the term “orientation?” And does he believe that an individual’s sexuality can be re-oriented to bring it in line with God’s design for humanity? These are straightforward questions.

The Associated Press recently ran an article which declared that Dr. Mohler believed that sexual orientation can never change, an article which the AP subsequently updated as follows: “In a story Nov. 26 about evangelicals with gay children, The Associated Press erroneously reported a statement by the Rev. Al Mohler about same-sex attraction. Mohler said same-sex attraction can't change through secular therapy but can change through the Gospel, not that same-sex attraction can never change.”

I was contacted via Twitter by Mr. Smith, who is Dr. Mohler’s chief spokesman, and a conversation ensued. I was hoping Mr. Smith would be as forthcoming with me as he apparently was with the Associated Press. Yet my efforts to elicit answers from Dr. Mohler’s spokesman, James Smith, were unsuccessful. (You can read the full exchange below.)

What was striking was the refusal of Mr. Smith to give straightforward answers to two simple questions: are people born with a homosexual orientation, and is reparative therapy something Dr. Mohler believes should be pursued by those in the homosexual lifestyle? The refusal to respond is puzzling and perhaps even disturbing.

Sadly, it appears that Dr. Mohler has been pulled into Russell Moore’s orbit. We can hope that’s not the case, and I remain happy to print Dr. Mohler’s answers to these basic questions. But I need to receive them first.

GOVERNORS CAVE ON STATES RIGHTS DEFENSE OF MARRIAGE

States, Why are You Petitioning a Corrupt Supreme Court to Enforce the True Definition of Marriage?

On Monday, the Supreme Court turned down five state appeals that sought to prohibit sodomite "marriage." The obvious question that should be asked is why the states appeal to the federal court in the first place. After all, marriage is none of their business.

Indiana, Oklahoma, Utah, Virginia, and Wisconsin all appealed to the United States Supreme Court to let them have a ban on redefining marriage. The question I have is, why?

First and foremost, as I wrote here, there is only one definition of marriage and it's a Biblical one. Second, the federal government was never given authority in this area by the states in the first place. So again, I ask why?

It's because these states don't have competent governors in office that will simply tell the Supreme Court where they can go and then implement the law in their state against sodomite "marriages." Personally, I'd like to see them implement legislation against sodomy and then they wouldn't be dealing with this nonsense of redefining marriage. And yes, I have no problem with dealing with sodomy permanently as the Bible tells us how to deal with it. If sodomites won't repent, then justice should be served upon them, not give them special rights and treat them as a specially protected class of citizens.

This is akin to giving the murderer, the rapist, the kidnapper and various other criminals (who should face capital punishment under biblical law) special rights and status in the society. How well do you think that would work out? It wouldn't work out and neither will this.

In fact, doing this right in the middle of the Communist plans to destroy America. According to the 45 Goals for the Communist Takeover of America that were entered into the Congressional record and enumerated in Cleon Strauss' book The Naked Communist:

26. Present homosexuality, degeneracy and promiscuity as "normal, natural, healthy."

Friends, there is nothing "normal, natural, or healthy" about homosexuality. The fact that even godless, anti-theistic Communists say that it must be "presented" this way tells you that they know it is the exact opposite.

However, where is the outcry of the professed Church in America? Oh I know, she is busy saying that we shouldn't throw stones or that we shouldn't judge lest we be judged. Those are excuses for cowards who are unwilling to offend sinners, but instead choose to offend God.

It's high time the Church grew a spine, understood what the Word of God said and proclaimed it unedited to sinners in need of a Savior from sin. Additionally, it's time that we also tell our state legislatures and governors to ignore the Supreme Court when it rules in an area it shouldn't be ruling and instead, as ministers of God (Rom.13), punish the evildoer justly. Make the Supreme Court enforce their ruling and if they think they can do it, we must be prepared to back up our state representatives.

As Edmund Burke famously said, "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."

America, it's time to stop doing nothing.

THE TRUTH ABOUT THE INS AND OUTSNOF HOMOSEXUALITY

What About Gays Needs to Change? It may not be what you think!

Copyrighted, Cross Ministry.

I am aware the question in this article's title presupposes a change of some sort is necessary. My presupposition is grounded in the authority of God's Word. Secondary to that—I am a Christian and a former homosexual.

Having now used that inadequate and puzzling term former homosexual, let me try to decipher the lingo and properly answer the question.

Moving the Fridge

Copyrighted.

A story will help. A man glances out his home window and sees his neighbor. The neighbor has his pick-up truck backed to his side door, both the storm and main doors are propped open and a refrigerator blocks the doorway. Obviously the fridge is being moved and help is needed, so the friendly onlooker rushes to help his red-faced neighbor.

"Need a hand with that refrigerator, Fred?" asks Steven as he throws himself into the task. "Sure do! This thing weighs more than I thought!"

Fred and Steven throw their muscular arms around the appliance. With sweat rolling down their faces, they grunt and strain as the fridge moves a quarter of an inch then stops. They reposition their arms. The fridge barely sways even though both men are winded. After wrestling with the stubborn refrigerator for a full ten minutes, Steven gasps "Fred, I don't believe we're ever going to get this thing in the house." "In the house!" exclaims Fred, "I trying to get it in the truck!"

The point is apparent-without a clear and focused understating of what direction the homosexual needs to go, he will progress no further than the refrigerator.

What Needs to Change?

An illustration will help. Imagine a very thin lady seated at a dinner table. She fidgets with her food, spoons it from one side of her plate to the other, eats little if anything, then excuses herself from the table.

Copyrighted.

"How can a visibly gaunt woman eat so little or not at all?" we ask. Our observation could lead us to two premises-either she dislikes food or she is not hungry. If we accept the first premise-that she dislikes food—our sympathetic approach might include a variety of recommendations.

We inquire about the type of food she does like—maybe fast food, Mexican or Chinese. If not perhaps the immaculate look of a seven-course meal appeals to her appetite. Perchance she prefers her food prepared a certain way-broiled versus fried, rare versus well done. If none of these recommendations help, she could have sitophobia-a fear of food.

Let's now assume the second premise—that she is not hungry. If this suspicion is true she may be suffering from a malfunctioning metabolism. We make a doctor's appointment for her. The physician suspects a thyroid condition and orders blood work. And it's possible she has hypogeusia-a diminished sense of taste.

But as persistent as we've been, all approaches make little difference in this lady's eating habits, or lack thereof. She eats very little and infrequently! Our methods have been genuine, compassionate, and justifiable. We have devoted considerable time in our quest to correct the dilemma, but to no avail.

The Puzzle Comes Together

However, if we learn this woman is anorexic, our approach changes dramatically and immediately. We realize our initial assumptions and strategies are ludicrous and laughable because they do not bear on the primary issue—a distorted self image.

Copyrighted.

When this self-starved lady looks in the mirror she sees an obese lady looking back and no amount of persuasion will convince her otherwise.

When this primary issue is addressed, her food intake as well as the frequency of her eating increases. But take note-her increased eating is a byproduct of confronting the main issue-a distorted self-image. And I use the term image not only from a clinical perspective but a biblical one. Genesis 1:26-27 reads,

“And God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, after our likeness’… So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.” (Emphasis added)

Now the Analogy

How does this illustration apply to the homosexual condition? Just as it is absurd for the anorexic's family and friends to focus on trying to make her eat, so it is absurd for churches to try and make the homosexual heterosexual.

Copyrighted

Society in general and churches in particular mistakenly believe freedom from homosexuality is marrying, having 2.3 children and a dog in the back yard. A 2001 secular study on the possibility of change shows the depth of this ingrained 'doctrine'. Dr Robert Spitzer, a Columbia University professor interviewed men and women who said they used to be homosexual; I was one of many he questioned. As beneficial as his study was and as much as I appreciate the visibility it gave to change, his study measured heterosexual function of the former homosexual—again missing the real issue.

“But” you ask, "don't homosexuals need to become heterosexuals?" No! Scripture never states nor implies all people must be heterosexual; it does say explicitly, however, that we are to avoid all forms of sexual immorality, which includes homosexuality. With that in mind have we not at times given the impression that homosexuals must “convert” to heterosexuality? Jesus did not say "Go and make [heterosexuals]"; He said "go and make disciples."

“But” you ask, "isn't heterosexuality the opposite of homosexuality?" No! The opposite of homosexuality is holiness!

As I wrote earlier, the term former homosexual is inadequate if not inappropriate. We mistakenly think a person who has found freedom from same-sex attractions is now heterosexual. The former homosexual man or woman may now experience heterosexual feelings, but heterosexuality should never be his nor the churches' goal. Heterosexuality is in many cases, but not all, a byproduct of the homosexual's dealing with the primary issues-a distorted self-image and faulty thinking-both of which Satan uses to “gain control.”

The church will do well to remember that singleness is not a sin, immorality is.

What all this means is that most of churches' advice to the homosexual misses the mark entirely!

Advice Well-Meant, but Wrong

Telling an adult gay son "you just need to date more; you haven't met the right girl" is senseless. Suggesting your lesbian friend "marry, settle down and everything will work out" is imprudent. Many gay men and women have married, thinking marriage will “heal” them and in most cases the consequences have been disastrous.

Some, hopefully not Christians, suggest a gay man "find a woman who can make you a man." While I 've never heard a Christian give such advice, I did have a twenty-seven year old gay man share the following with me. He said he was fifteen when his “Christian” father learned of his homosexual struggle. To 'help' his son the father bought him a subscription to Playboy magazine. That's equivalent to serving roast duck to the anorexic.

God does not heal one form of immorality with another form of immorality! How effective is a machine gun against a tidal wave?

"For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms" (Eph. 6:12).

One married struggler told me his well-meaning pastor recommended he have more sex with his wife. Although the Bible does command conjugal rights (I Cor. 7:3-4), the pastor's advice bypassed the real issue.

Another pastor prayed with an unusually handsome and struggling man, then told him "I've got a really nice girl in the church I want you to meet."

A Christian friend who knows my testimony, met my wife Lisa and said "I can see why you left homosexuality; your wife is beautiful." While he is correct that Lisa is beautiful his statement, like so many, represents a global ignorance on the subject. If attractive women were the remedy for male homosexuality, there would be no gay men.

Many gay men ask me how to cultivate a romantic/sexual attraction to women. I tell them that is not the issue; the issue is a distorted/broken image. (I have often thought how devious our adversary is. He not only confuses men and women regarding their sexual identity, he also confuses them and the church as to what healing really is, thus compounding the problem.)

By dealing with the primary issue, gay men begin to see themselves as masculine and lesbians begin to see themselves as feminine; the same-sex attractions diminish and in many cases opposite-sex attractions occur.

Not a Means to an End

During my own journey out of homosexuality I made a significant discovery—Jesus Christ is not a means to an end. He is the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End. I did not go to Christ to get something else, namely heterosexuality. I went to Christ to get HIM!

When we learn this truth, we will witness prison doors falling off their hinges and chains disintegrating.

PEDIATRICIANS PUSH HOMOSEXUALITY

Will your child, grandchild, neighbor or friend be subjected to this propaganda? This is beyond insanity and will only get worse because we have bought the mass marketing LIE that homosexuality is an alternate lifestyle, rather than a  "silent" scream for recognition.

We have remained aloof, or worse still judgmental, and now any word to contradict the marketing genius of this perversion of humanity is dubbed as hate speech. It does not end here. This is only the beginning of the fast track to the "Fall of the Roman Empire". Read history! Nations have been to this place before! America cannot survive in the current state of lying to the public to mass market the withholding of truth. Homosexuality is a choice, not a scientific phenomenon. It is an unfortunate misguiding toward confusion with NO scientific basis. There is NO genetic evidence. There is NO DNA evidence. Yet the scientific community remains silent on the basis of political correctness.

I, for one, boldly state that homosexuality is just another addiction and ultimate poison in the elixir of civilization. Health care providers, psychologists, clergy and lawmakers who support this negligence will live to regret the travesty of its aftermath, and they will be an eternal object of embarrassment just as the German citizens who were forced to march in front of rows and rows of dead bodies that they, knowing in their hearts, pretended we're not there.

Misguided human beings need help, NOT a free pass to personal destruction. No civilization that has ever embraced homosexuality has ever survived this misstep. We are witnessing the demise of American civilization. We will not survive this and remain free. Homosexuality is the slave holder of our time.

Love speaks out even when love is rejected. May we love enough to speak the truth and be willing to accept the consequences of our warning. I love too much to be a silent bystander. Love doesn't pretend that destruction is not taking place. Love is selfless enough to say, "I will not stand idly by and watch you destroy yourself, regardless of what it might cost me."

Speak the truth. Speak it in love. Never let it be said of me that I didn't extend a life line.
