THE ALLIANCE RESPONDS TO THE RECENT SUPREME COURT RULING ON MARRIAGE EQUALITY

In the Alliance we unite to bring the gospel of Jesus Christ to our cities, our regions, our country and “the ends of the earth.” Throughout the church’s history there have been events that seem to hinder this redemptive message. Such an event took place today when the Supreme Court issued a decision that requires every state to recognize marriage between two people of the same sex.

In the next few weeks the National Office will offer an in-depth analysis of what this decision does and doesn’t mean for the local church. But for now, it reminds us that “this world is not our permanent home; we are looking forward to a world yet to come” (Hebrews 13:14). It reinforces that our hope is in Christ (Romans 5:2-5; Hebrews 6:17-20) and not in any political or judicial system. And finally, it encourages us to be loving and faithful witnesses of our Lord Jesus Christ.

“I’m disheartened but not surprised by today’s Supreme Court ruling on marriage equality,” notes U.S. Alliance President John Stumbo. “The current trajectory of our nation is a steady walk away from historic Christianity and biblical teaching. Today’s ruling is yet one more marker on that dangerous trail. However, as the Alliance family, we hold the scripture higher than human reasoning or courts. We will welcome the love of Jesus to flow through our hearts to all who disagree with us. We’ll refuse to get into shouting matches over these issues. And, we’ll continue to uphold Christian marriage as determined by our Creator and defined in Matthew 19:4-6: “Haven’t you read,” Jesus replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.””

Under no circumstances will our clergy perform weddings contrary to this Biblical standard. Meanwhile, may we take every opportunity with everyone we encounter to extend the life-giving gospel of Jesus in a winsome and loving manner.”

We affirm the following statement by the National Association of Evangelicals:

God Defined Marriage

God designed marriage for humanity. As first described in Genesis and later affirmed by Jesus, marriage is a God-ordained, covenant relationship between a man and a woman. This lifelong, sexually exclusive relationship brings children into the world and thus sustains the stewardship of the earth. Biblical marriage — marked by faithfulness, sacrificial love and joy — displays the relationship between God and his people. [1]

While commentators, politicians and judges may revise their understanding of marriage in response to shifting societal trends, followers of Jesus should embrace his clear vision of marriage found in Matthew 19:4-6.

Nothing in the Supreme Court’s Obergefell v. Hodges opinion changes the truth about marriage. What has changed is the legal definition of marriage, which is now at variance with orthodox biblical faith as it has been affirmed across the centuries and as it is embraced today by nearly two billion Christians in every nation on earth.

In its role as a moral teacher, the law now misleads Americans about the true nature of marriage. Evangelicals and other followers of the Bible have a heightened opportunity to demonstrate the attractiveness of loving Christian marriages and families. Evangelicals should renew their commitment to the sacrificial love and covenantal faithfulness to which Jesus calls all husbands and wives.

As witnesses to the truth, evangelicals should be gracious and compassionate to those who do not share their views on marriage. Those who continue to embrace biblical teaching on marriage will increasingly appeal to the First Amendment protection not just for abstract belief, but for the practice of their faith. The National Association of Evangelicals calls on Congress to enact laws, on the president to implement policies, and on the courts to render judgments that uphold the freedom and human rights of all Americans.

If liberals hoped the Vatican was softening its stance on marriage, next week’s conference is sure to set the record straight. FromNovember 17-19, the home of the Catholic Church is hosting “An International Interreligious Colloquium on the Complementarity of Man and Woman” with pro-family leaders from around the world, including FRC’s Peter Sprigg, Dr. Pat Fagan, and myself.

Although the event was planned before last month’s Synod, Pope Francis will kick off the conference and is expected to address the controversy raised from the October flap, when reports suggest that the Church was opening the door to same-sex “marriage.” Scholars from a host of religions (Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Mormon) will descend on Vatican City to support and reinvigorate natural marriage and family life. With the international debate over same-sex “marriage” heating up, most people hope the colloquium will be a catalyst for global solidarity in the work of strengthening marriage.Apart from Pope Francis, attendees will also hear from:

• Cardinal Gerhard Müller, Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith
• Archbishop Charles Chaput, Archbishop of Philadelphia and host of next year’s World Meeting of Families
• Rick Warren, Senior Pastor of Saddleback Church
• Bishop N.T. Wright, Professor of New Testament and early Christianity at the School of Theology of the University of St. Andrews

States, Why are You Petitioning a Corrupt Supreme Court to Enforce the True Definition of Marriage?

On Monday, the Supreme Court turned down five state appeals that sought to prohibit sodomite "marriage." The obvious question that should be asked is why the states appeal to the federal court in the first place. After all, marriage is none of their business.

Indiana, Oklahoma, Utah, Virginia, and Wisconsin all appealed to the United States Supreme Court to let them have a ban on redefining marriage. The question I have is, why?

First and foremost, as I wrote here, there is only one definition of marriage and it's a Biblical one. Second, the federal government was never given authority in this area by the states in the first place. So again, I ask why?

It's because these states don't have competent governors in office that will simply tell the Supreme Court where they can go and then implement the law in their state against sodomite "marriages." Personally, I'd like to see them implement legislation against sodomy and then they wouldn't be dealing with this nonsense of redefining marriage. And yes, I have no problem with dealing with sodomy permanently as the Bible tells us how to deal with it. If sodomites won't repent, then justice should be served upon them, not give them special rights and treat them as a specially protected class of citizens.

This is akin to giving the murderer, the rapist, the kidnapper and various other criminals (who should face capital punishment under biblical law) special rights and status in the society. How well do you think that would work out? It wouldn't work out and neither will this.

In fact, doing this right in the middle of the Communist plans to destroy America. According to the 45 Goals for the Communist Takeover of America that were entered into the Congressional record and enumerated in Cleon Strauss' book The Naked Communist:

26. Present homosexuality, degeneracy and promiscuity as "normal, natural, healthy."

Friends, there is nothing "normal, natural, or healthy" about homosexuality. The fact that even godless, anti-theistic Communists say that it must be "presented" this way tells you that they know it is the exact opposite.

However, where is the outcry of the professed Church in America? Oh I know, she is busy saying that we shouldn't throw stones or that we shouldn't judge lest we be judged. Those are excuses for cowards who are unwilling to offend sinners, but instead choose to offend God.

It's high time the Church grew a spine, understood what the Word of God said and proclaimed it unedited to sinners in need of a Savior from sin. Additionally, it's time that we also tell our state legislatures and governors to ignore the Supreme Court when it rules in an area it shouldn't be ruling and instead, as ministers of God (Rom.13), punish the evildoer justly. Make the Supreme Court enforce their ruling and if they think they can do it, we must be prepared to back up our state representatives.

As Edmund Burke famously said, "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."

America, it's time to stop doing nothing.
