CHARLES SUMNER: REPUBLICAN ACTIVIST

Charles Sumner

Hated by Democrats and Whigs alike,


1.  graduated from Harvard in 1830. He

2. U.S. Representative anti-slavery activist

3. Born January 6, 1811, in Boston, Massachusetts. 

4. Elected to the U.S. Senate in 1852, 

5. Supported abolition. After the Civil War, Sumner 

6. Joined the Radical Republicans who believed the South should be punished. During his 20 year career, Sumner most notably 

7. Authored the nation’s first civil rights legislation in 1866. 

8.Anti-slavery advocate 

9. Died on March 11, 1874, in Washington D.C.
