Guiliani: Black Areas Wouldn't Need White Cops 'If You Weren't Killing Each Other'

Ninety-three percent of blacks are killed by other blacks,” said former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani, touching off a heated debate on NBC’s “Meet the Press” yesterday. “I would like to see the attention paid to that that you are paying to this” issue of racial disparity in the police force.

“Most black people who commit crimes against other black people go to jail,” said Georgetown University professor Eric Michael Dyson. “Number two, they’re not sworn by the police department as an agent of the state to uphold the lie. It’s a false equivalency that the mayor has drawn – black people who kill black people go to jail, white people who are policemen who kill black people do not go to jail.”

Guiliani removes his glasses and says, “It’s hardly insignificant, it is the reason for the heavy police presence in the black community.”

Dyson angrily interrupted Guiliani a few times, but Guiliani contined: “What about the poor black child that was killed by another black child? Why aren’t you protesting that?”

“Those people go to jail!” said an exasperated Dyson.

“Why don’t you protest that?” said Guiliani.

“I do protest it! I’m a minister, those people go to jail,” said Dyson. “Why don’t you talk about the way in which white policemen have undercut the ability of Americans who live…”

Guiliani interrupted Dyson: “Why don’t you cut it down so that so many white police officers don’t have to be in black areas?”

“How about your attitude reinforces the problematic perspective that prevails in our culture,” said Dyson.

“Well how about you reduce crime,” said Guiliani.

“When I become mayor, I’ll do that,” replied Dyson.

“White police officers wouldn’t be there if you weren’t killing each other,” said Guiliani.

“This is a mechanism of white supremacy at work,” said Dyson, a sociology professor at Georgetown University.
